08 Aug Discover the Journey & the Destination: Survival and Adventure Expeditions in Southeast Queensland
There is a popular saying we often see used across modern culture that “the journey is greater than the destination”. But when it comes to the outdoor education experience, what if the journey and the destination were equally as great? What if the physical journey through our beautiful land and waterways was the destination? What long-lasting benefits can expeditions offer a student beyond their trip? Could expeditions even have benefits for the modern school student’s future employability?
At QCCC this is true of our experience of the Survival and expedition programs our team operate throughout some of Southeast Queensland’s most scenic terrain. Whether it is a day trip, an overnight trip, or a 5-day trip, our Survival and journey-based programs allow students to experience nature up close, connect and build relationships, learn some new physical skills, and gain fresh knowledge from our experienced instructors.
Whether it is the breathtaking views bushwalking through the Aussie bushland to learn about the environment from Australian First Nations People, or canoeing down lower Obi Obi creek, or Kayaking from Brisbane to setup camp on the islands of Moreton Bay, the journey and the destination work together to provide experiences that make positive memories for a lifetime.
Our Survival Camps are a great option if you are a schoolteacher looking to craft a tent-camping program to benefit your students. Teaching basic survival skills, fire cooking and tent camping, this program delivers growth in personal capacity, seen in greater leadership capacity, teamwork, resilience, decision making, relationship building, self-awareness and bush survival skills. These are great learning outcomes for developing lasting life skills and discovering the potential of every student.
Research shows that despite the variety of levels of where young people are at in their personal development, they find the positive benefits in the experience of Expeditions. Research by the University of Edinburgh1 (2014) conducted on Personal Development Through Expeditions, discovered significant post-expedition improvements in personal areas such as confidence, leadership capacity, mental toughness, self-belief, and motivation to name a few.
One area this proven self-development translates well for high school students particularly, is employability. Designing an expedition program to achieve these outcomes could provide students with the opportunity to include the skills learned and demonstrated on their first resume. Expeditions provide distinctive experiences that could help students stand out to employers when applying for their first job. Employers love to see examples of where prospective employees have learned and demonstrated skills needed for the job and shown initiative and perseverance.
Talk to our Outdoor Education team today about how to go about planning a tailored program based on your group’s ability level, that achieves your desired learning outcomes, and will stand out to employers on your students’ first resume.
